Preserving Stories of Service for Future Generations

Every day hundreds of Veterans are dying.

How many  legacies must we continue to lose?
Veterans who share their story leave behind a lasting legacy.
Volunteers are the pillars of this project.

About The Veterans History Project

In 2000 the Veterans History Project was originated by the U.S. Congress (public law 106-380) when the Library of Congress was mandated to collect the stories of veterans and civilians who contributed to the liberties we all enjoy in the United States. A war record is not required.

When the need to start collecting these narratives was realized and this opportunity was mandated by congressional action, the Branson Veterans Task Force successfully petitioned the Folklife Center of the Library of Congress to become an archiving partner.

Wartime memories are becoming precious with the passing of veterans and the need to collect these histories became a priority. Locally a large number of interviews result from veteran reunions held in Branson. All interviews are copied and sent to the Library of Congress (LOC) as well as archived at the College of the Ozarks www.cofo.edu. For interview locations through out the nation the Veteran History Project partners and interviews can be found on www.loc.gov/vets .

How You Can Help

The BVTF is seeking volunteers locally to help in the promotion and collection of these historical interviews about individual patriotic efforts for our country's behalf.

There is no government funding for this program, funds come from local donors so all contributions are graciously accepted. Not enough talented volunteers are forthcoming so this too is a real need.

Here is how you may participate in the Veterans History Project-

  • Call for an appointment at the Branson Veterans Task Force in Branson, Missouri 417-337-8387

  • Allow at least 1.5 hours at the designated location.

  • Fill out a biographical data sheet and sign a release.

  • One or more copies may be obtained for a small fee.

Beginning in 2004 the tapes with optional documents and small souvenirs are archived on the campus at College of the Ozarks - 417-334-6411 X 3411

It is vital for future generations to know about these individual efforts that made important contributions to protect the liberties we hold so dear and take for granted.
